UNIVERSALITY OF IT ALL

How the friendship between two people, connects to the geopolitical events of the 21st century.

A thought-provoking documentary that offers a compelling perspective on the reality of human migration, highlighting larger systemic issues such as economic inequality, geopolitical interests, and social unrest through the personal experiences of two friends navigating the challenges of migration.

"The Universality of It All" marked the debut documentary film of director Andres Bronnimann, who later founded UNIVERSALITY© in 2023, inspired in the findings and insights contained in this film. The story centers around the friendship of Andres and his Yemeni roommate, Emad Al-Maqtary, during the war in Yemen that began in 2014. With intimate interviews with Emad and relevant data on human migration trends, the film connects the micro to the macro, revealing the complexity of migration and how it intertwines with larger systemic issues. The film offers a unique perspective on the interconnectedness of global issues and how they impact individuals on a personal level.

In the style of a documentary-essay, our film argues for a more compassionate approach to human migration. Through the personal experiences of Emad, it examines the interconnectivity of global events and how they drive migration patterns. The film goes beyond data and statistics to show how migration is a natural occurrence, and how artificial geopolitical boundaries create undue suffering for those seeking better lives. It raises questions about the future of humanity as climate change threatens to upend existing habitable zones, and challenges us to think critically about the role of borders in our social and political structures.

The film premiered at the Bushwick Film Festival and won the Vision Award at the New York Socially Relevant Film Festival in 2021. The film's success led to a distribution deal with IndiePix, making it available on Amazon, XBOX, RokuTV, and Virtual Cinemas. Executive produced by Don Thompson and co-produced by DREAM STUFF INC, the film continues to screen at various migration-related events, including the IOM Global Migration Film Festival and the London Migration Film Festival.
